San Diego Airport Smoking Area: Location, Rules, and Tips

San Diego International Airport doesn’t allow anyone to smoke within the undesignated and public areas. Passengers are required to exit the building to smoke even after security check. All types of cigarettes and vapes are banned from being carried inside, and a penalty will be charged. Flyers going to smoke after security check will clear security again to enter the departure area. Additionally, it is important to be at least 25 feet away from the building while smoking.

At present, all the San Diego Smoking areas are outdoors, as every terminal building, restroom, lounge, security point, restaurant, and more is specifically a smoking-free zone. But flyers are free to exit these areas and smoke in the open areas, including:

• Outside Terminal 1 and 2 gates

• Before entering the airport

• Parking lots

• Baggage claim area

• San Diego Rental Car Pickup points

San Diego Airport Smoking Policy

Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited inside all terminals at San Diego International Airport (SAN). Outdoor smoking areas are available only on Level 1 outside the terminal buildings, positioned at least 25 feet from entrances, exits, and windows. 

• No indoor Smoking: Traditional Cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and vapes are banned in all indoor areas, including gates, restaurants, and lounges. 

• Connecting flights: Flyers catching a connecting flight will have to exit the security areas, head outside the building to smoke, and clear security again while returning. 

• State & Local Laws: California law and city regulations prohibit smoking within 20 to 25 feet of any public building entrance. Ashtrays are provided in specific approved spots to prevent littering and fires.

Mindful Tips for Smoking at SAN Airport

Flyers should be mindful while traveling throughSan Diego International Airport; they can even use a few alternatives if unable to smoke. 

• Never smoke inside: SAN Airport is a smoking-free area, and no passenger must be seen smoking within the premises. 

• Use Nicotine: If someone doesn’t have time to move out and smoke, they must carry nicotine chewing gum that reduces the urge to have a cigarette.

• Avoid Exiting: When the layover is short, flyers must not leave the terminal, as passing through security again can risk missing the flight.

• Maintain Distance: Ensure standing at least 20 feet away from any main entrance, exit, or operable window when smoking. 

• Vaping Rules: Treat e-cigarettes and vapes exactly like traditional cigarettes; they are only permitted in these outdoor curbside zones.
  
  

The outside smoking area on level 1 is near the curbside check-in; flyers can smoke there before moving inside or coming out. Apart from this, the entire airport doesn’t allow people to smoke. Additionally, if someone is caught vaping or smoking, a $100 charge will be applied as a penalty.
